The E-Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2011 have been notified in May 2011 and will be effective from 01-05- 2012. These rules were notified in advance to give the various stakeholders adequate time to prepare themselves and also to place the required infrastructure for the effective implementation of these rules.

Central Pollution Control Board Guidelines
MOEF/CPCB after consulting various stake holders felt the need for preparing a guidance document for implementation of the provisions of the E-Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 2016 that may help the Producers, Consumer & Bulk Consumer, Collection Center, Dismantler, Recycler and Regulatory agencies (SPCBs/PCCs) for effective compliance/implementation of these rules.
This document also provides guidance on setting up collection mechanism, dismantling and recycling operations. As the E-waste Rules place main responsibility of e-waste management on the producers of the electrical and electronic equipment by introducing the concept of “extended producer responsibility” (EPR). The scope of implementing such EPRs is also discussed in these guidelines.

ISO 14001. A baseline for any company involved in recycling or handling e-Waste, ISO 14001 is an international standard for developing and operating an environmental management system (EMS). Companies rely on an EMS to help them identify, manage, monitor, and control environmental issues relevant to their business with the goal of ensuring environmental impact is measured and improved.
OHSAS 18001. This certification ensures that recycling processes comply with Occupational Health and Safety Advisory Services standards to provide a safe working environment for staff and external parties. The OHSAS 18001 certification ensures that companies meet legal and regulatory requirements for health and safety around the world.

Additionally, the recycler needs to maintain the following valid registration under state pollution board:
